The reef's standing today rests on policy as much as biology. Belize prohibited bottom trawling in 2010 and suspended offshore oil activity in its waters in 2017. Green and hawksbill turtles graze the seagrass meadows; eagle rays cross the channels; tarpon hold in the deeper cuts.
