In 1842 Charles Darwin called the Belize Barrier Reef the most remarkable reef in the West Indies, and he wrote it from charts rather than from the water.
The formation runs roughly 300 kilometres along the coast, the longest unbroken reef in the Northern Hemisphere and the northern third of the Mesoamerican Barrier Reef System. Caye Caulker lies inside its shelter, an eight-kilometre spit of sand, mangrove and seagrass set parallel to the crest. Protection came late. Hol Chan Marine Reserve was gazetted in 1987 as the first marine reserve in Belize, taking its name from the Mayan for little channel — the natural cut through the reef that funnels water, and fish, between lagoon and open sea. Shark Ray Alley was folded into the reserve in 1999, a fishermen's cleaning ground where nurse sharks and southern stingrays had learned to gather behind returning boats. UNESCO inscribed the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System in 1996 across seven protected areas. It spent 2009 to 2018 on the List of World Heritage in Danger, restored only after Belize ended offshore oil exploration in its waters. What the listing protects is legible from the surface: elkhorn and staghorn thickets, brain coral the size of cattle, seagrass meadows grazed by green turtles, and the manatees that shelter in Swallow Caye to the south. Water clarity on the leeward side commonly runs past 20 metres. Coral bleaching events have thinned the shallowest stands. The channel walls have held.
Caye Caulker itself was split in two by Hurricane Hattie in 1961; the resulting cut, the Split, is now the island's meeting point. Its own marine reserve followed in 1998. Golf carts replaced cars, the go-slow ordinance held, and fishing families moved into guiding. Guides are licensed by the Belize Tourism Board and trained in reef-safe handling; nothing on the reserve floor is meant to be touched.
