Charles Darwin, writing in 1842, called the Belize Barrier Reef the most remarkable reef in the West Indies — and he never saw it underwater. The formation runs roughly 300 kilometres down the Caribbean coast, the largest continuous reef in the Northern Hemisphere and the backbone of the wider Mesoamerican system.
Coral built it slowly, over some 6,000 years, on a drowned limestone shelf. Caye Caulker is eight kilometres long and barely more than a kilometre wide, a sand-and-mangrove strip reached by water taxi from Belize City. The waters worked by Caye Caulker Snorkeling Tours were charted by lobster fishermen long before cartographers.
Hol Chan means "little channel" in Mayan, and the name is literal: a natural cut, roughly thirty metres across and nine metres deep, slicing through the reef crest. Belize declared it a marine reserve in 1987, the country's first. The decision followed years of pressure from fishermen who watched their catch thin. Access is regulated rather than open — a conservation fee of 15 USD per person funds wardens and mooring buoys — and the water runs on a working day of 06:00–18:00, seven days a week. Shark Ray Alley entered the reserve as Zone D in 1999. It began as a cleaning station of a different kind: fishermen gutted their catch in the shallows, nurse sharks and southern stingrays learned the sound of the engines, and the habit outlasted the fishing. UNESCO inscribed the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System as a World Heritage site in 1996, seven protected areas under a single listing. It spent nine years on the List of World Heritage in Danger; a nationwide moratorium on offshore oil drilling, passed in 2017, saw it removed in 2018.
The island's own geography is younger than the reef and rougher. Hurricane Hattie tore through in 1961 and widened the channel now called The Split, cutting the caye in two. North of it, the Caye Caulker Marine Reserve was gazetted in 1998 to protect littoral forest, seagrass beds and mangrove nursery. Between the two reserves lie spur-and-groove coral formations, green turtles, eagle rays and elkhorn stands recovering from bleaching. Caye Caulker Snorkeling Tours tours are, in that sense, a form of custody: the reef's protection is now financed largely by the people who come to look at it.
